John,

>I will concede that VFP can do all four parts.

Thank you; that's all I was getting at. 'Can', not 'should'.

>FWIW, having a Fox app that is forced to deal with Fox data in an n-tier scenario makes no sense. So while in theory, the argument could be made that VFP can provide all 4, is it practical? I think not.

Indeed, but that wasn't my point. Got to teach you lawyers to stay on task. <g>

My first recommendation for the back end (data) would, of course, be SQL, DB2, Oracle, Informix or some other equally robust data engine. Probably start with SQL 2000.

However, for the smaller business I'd think that it might be eminently practical to start with VFP on the back end and then when able to migrate to SQL, for example. All our grand theoretical notions must live in a very practical world. In this case, of course, we'd want to so design the app as to most easily facilitate the later migration. I don't think we need to digress into the wonderful experiences we've all had where a client insists on being 'penny wise and pound foolish' do we? <g>

>My question is what value/utility does this provide? More specifically, to the world at large, what is the perceived value? If it were all that important or of value, VFP would not be in the position it is in.

Time will tell I suppose here John. I think it can be huge, could go away but in all likelyhood will be strong for years to come. That's not based on some dreamy-eyed emotional wish. I just happen to think that the product offer some approaches and benefits others do not. Not to mention all that yummy legacy code just waiting to get upgraded. <g> I think that a VFP-only approach could be a hugely beneficial 'solution' in many cases. Again, we all agree I'd think on what would be the best tradeoffs but we're not always going to find ourselves in the position to take those choices.

>If there is no practicality, there is no need for debate..

You are presuming the conclusion before the evidence here it seems. <g>
