>When you're about done with a program, ask everyone (the person who hired you AND the people using the program) to recommend you to their friends. Hand out business cards as if you owned the paper factory. Clients who are pleased with your work are the best source of new business.
Clients pleased with my work do not want me 'moving up' or spending great amounts of time with other clients, thus, some do not give me recommendations.
The best source of new biz (for me) comes from network engineers and setup people. They usually have many clients. I keep the 'finger pointing' to a minimum and focus on solving the job at hand when issues arise with the database. Later on, the network engineer is willing to recommend my work to other clients. I feel more comfortable offering database solutions to clients when I know their basic network configuration and setup is in competent hands.
