It is in SQL *expressions* that the difficulty arises. I try to use approved odbc function wrappers. Eg, not Upper() which works with some databases, but {fn UCASE(myvar)} which gets mapped by the odbc to work properly everywhere I've tried. There are others that need a bit more work like date differences, but often you can just pull the 2 dates and do the work at display time using a VFP index or an expression.
If you have a big Oracle project, I recommend you at least look at xcase-
www.xcase.com because if you *start* the project with xCase, you can do the data in Oracle, SQL Server, whatever you like, easily. It also automatically updates your views as you change your table schemas- one of the big gripes about using RVs. Worth every cent IMHO.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
