How big is your hard drive? How big are the individual partitions? Are you using LILO or Win2k's boot loader for the main boot loader? Where did you write LILO? (MBR or first sector of boot partition)

Your boot floppy is merely a LILO-style config. When you boot, it says "This is where the root partition is and this is which kernel I want you to load" among other things.
