I'd have to agree with Tamar about secret ballots. Hopefully it will never happen in this country, but far too many tyrants have stayed in power thru voter persecution.

Think smaller here - the biggest problem that places like Florida face is with their reliance on relatively fragile punch-cards. A relatively simple system could use an Internet-only touch-screen box to record the votes, print the final ballot if a paper one is required, and report the results back to a central repository. A printed ballot would also allow for write-ins. Registration confirmation could (and should) be done thru a separate box, again hitting a central database, which would also allow a voter to go anywhere (we have a big problem here in Texas with folks not knowing what precinct they are registered in).

"Receipts" are also not a great idea IMHO. This would too easily lead to "vote-buying", i.e. Joe Homeless goes to vote, and turns his ticket in to (fill in the blank party) for his reward. The "butterfly" style ballot would be eliminated thru an all-on-one-screen UI in the above scenario.

Anyway, that's my $0.02.
