For what little it's worth:
I feel that, should your scenerio come to pass, we'll see the Republicans pulling out all the legal stops to do what they can to get a more favorable result (perhaps a lawsuit to invalidate the count and throw it all into a Republican dominated state legislature?)
Gore may be a very sleazy politician, but Bush is a politician as well and is supported by other politicians. Their objective is to WIN and they'll do whatever they legally can to do that.
