Bitmaps work fine. Jpgs don't

I have the following installed:
Photoshop 5.5
Fireworks 3
QuickTime Picture Viewer,
and others.

But I get the following error message when I try to append general picture from filename.jpg

Ole error code 0x800100007: The Callee (server (not server application) is not available and disappeared; all connections are invalid.
The call may have executed.

Since I have so many applications that read JPGS I'm not sure what to do next.
