The point here, Doug, made even by conservative pundits, is that Harris should have allowed the late Palm Beach recount in the totals, it was only a few hours late, and did not change the net outcome.

It would've made her decisions appear less partisan, and the whole Gore effort might have collapsed right there, according to some of both parties in Congress. As it was, she just poured gasoline on the fire, angering many Dems. She clearly had the authority to wait those extra few hours, the flexible deadline the court set was 9 AM Monday. A large tactical blunder by Harris and/or Bush people.
