I'm constantly being bombardied with requests for extremmely complex validations, queries and data formatting for presentation. I need a very flexible local data engine to meet these demands!
<<

Not that I disagree with the premise, but why is VFP THE best tool for this? I see the benefit of a local data engine. However, does that mean you are working with local data or remote data? If there is remote data, the implication is that you need to get the data to a local engine.

At this point, are you bringing down large amounts of data and manipulating it locally? If so, why is this the best way? I understand it if it is the way you know how to do it. That said, the way a developer knows how to do somehting is not necessarily the best or only way to accomplish a task.

Another thought.... where is it written in stone that VFP is the one correct best tool to use when you are confronted with complext validations, queries and data formatting requirements?

The issue is not whether VFP can do the work. The issue is whether other tools can do the work - and by using those other tools - your job prospects and technology base is more certain.

Each person must make up his/her own mind. However, to continue down a path because it is the path well-worn and one that has always been used and ignoring other alternatives is a dangerous way to go...

ADO might be fine for distributed apps, but for the kind of stuff I'm doing, I feel it leaves a lot to be desired. I don't see myself getting away from FAT client front ends any time soon.
<<

That depends on how you are using ADO...

>I think MS is so wrapped up in this thin client\distributed app world that they are forgetting about the real world needs of the average office worker. The need for highly functional, rohbust systems to manage company data and automate business processes is not going to go away. I totally agree with Rick Strahl when he predicted developers will be coming back to the desktop and start thinking of the internet as just another network. IMO, VFP is king in this scenario!
>

Absolutely. However, why do you think this means good news for VFP? If MS would get smart and support VFP, I would think that VFP has a long life. VFP is a great tool. However, from a business standpoint, it is difficult - if not impossible to stay in the camp because of continually shrinking market.

I think MS is F-ing stupid for ignoring the Desktop market. I have said this and screamed this for 2 years. If anybody fought the good fight - I did. In effect, I threw in the towel.

>
You just said in the paragraph above that VFP has an advantage with respect to data. Make up your mind.

There are different contexts Charlie. Look over the post again...
