>>Not that I disagree with the premise, but why is VFP THE best tool for this?

The navigtional commands in xBase work really well when you need to do the row by row stuff, like in complex validations and other complex data manipulation tasks.

I always bring down as little data as I need. I always look at the trade off between another trip to the server vs bringing down a little extra data. Most of the time, if it more than one record, its a parent record and its associated child records which are then related on the client. Also, the user experience factors into my decision as well.

Like I said, xBase works really well for the row by row stuff.

Right on! Thats why I'm jumping into C# when it becomes available. I'll find ways to make it work. Someday I would like to be on my own and VFP, thanx to MS's lack of support, limits your opportunities.

Had this conversation with another VFP guy the other day. He tells me "no way will I switch to SQL Server!" Then starts in to preaching all this nonsense. I walk away laughing inside thinking how this turkey is gonna be out of a job if he doesn't change his tune.

>>Absolutely. However, why do you think this means good news for VFP?

I don't know if it means good news to VFP, but VFP is excellent for this kind of work. The key to success with VFP is establishing customer trust. If you can produce, they won't dictate what tools to use. Then, hopefully other customers will see what your doing and feel the same way. With VFP, you have to do your own marketing. Evidence of good work talks, bullshit walks!

I getting there too.
