>I got some more information from another source (outside of Univeral Thread) about this subject. My source, a network administrator, suggests leaving "Scan files when they are [x] Run or opened" turned on, and turning off "[ ] Enable SmartScan technology" which "scans files that contain embedded OLE objects that could contain malicious code." Doing this also gets around the performance issue with NAV.

From what I can see from Symantec's website, it looks like enabling SmartScan would be a better bet, as it's designed to look only for executable code -- so it would not scan the source code or other files that we check in and out of VSS by design.
I went to compare the performance of the options, and found that the SmartScan technology is new to NAV 2001/Version 7; we're running version 6 here(hmmm...gotta find out why...). Maybe someone else who's reading can jump in and add their thoughts?
