You will be able to do both if the server name is able to be resolved to a TCPIP address. This is done by creating a DNS entry in your DNS server or by using a WINS server to resolve NetBIOS names (i.e. workstation names).

If PING Servername works, then the name is able to be resolved. If not, then you need to talk to your network people about updating the DNS/WINS systems for the SQL Server machine.
