Works in VFP6 if you chage your code like this:
SELECT Products.*,Prices.Price ;
FROM Products
inner join Prices on Products.ID = Prices.ID ;
WHERE Prices.ID in ;
(SELECT Prices.ID,MAX(prices.effective_date) FROM Prices ;
group by Prices.ID )
