Now a record was what we used to listen to recorded music on prior to CDs and casette tapes. They were made of vinyl and while not easily broken, were subject to scratching, which sometimes made the same part of the song play over and over and over again and directly led to the cliche that you used. However, using vinyl as the material was much better than what was used before which was shellac. These were very easy to break. Dropping one could break it. These older recording were played at 78 RPMs, as opposed to 45 or 33 1/3 RPMs of its successors.
