Jerry,

>Within the Linux community, on Linux systems, most certainly, since Kylix isn't out yet. I question how many folks fluent in C++ and Pascal would switch from C++ (in any platform) to Kylix and Pascal. After giving it serious thought I pretty sure I won't. Most emacs users wouldn't. KDevelopers who had prior experience with Delphi *might*. But, considering the power of KDevelop, and it's price, it would be doubtful. Also, considering that the Qt widgets are also well priced against 3rd party widgets for Kylix, who would shell out $600 for Delphi (Kylix ?) and then more $$$ for third party tools? Some companies might. Especially those well conditioned to paying for propriatary software and being locked out of the code. They may not think it worth their while to get so deep into the tool set. Time will tell.

Yes, within the Linux community I am sure KDevelop has quite a following. Then again, Over 50% of Linux developers still use command-line tools...

I was speaking more about the hordes of folks who use Delphi in Windows. Transferring a complex Delphi Windows app to Linux will be hard work, but more doable than starting from scratch. And for any new development, using the cross-platform class libs will allow apps to run in Linux and Windows right off the bat, including data access, web-enablement, etc., etc.

As for folks preferring C++...eventually Kylix will be the front and for Pascal, C++ (ala C++ Builder) and probably Java (ala JBuilder). All of these tools will use a common IDE, and all will be complete two-way tools with cross-platform class libs. Yes, it costs money, but as Linux picks up steam Kylix could very well become a corporate development tool, and corporations don't mind spending money on tools -- some even insist upon it. *smile*

I don't think Borland cares about wooing emacs-using developers over to Kylix...those folks would never change no matter what toolset you present them with... *grin*
