How many rest stops will be needed? I have problems with more than a few hundred steps myself, and simple logic says there will be a LOT more than that. AFAIK the space elevator at least lets you sit in comfort while it does the work for you.

Maybe a combination? Elevator until we're outside the gravity well and then stairs the rest of the way? Garrett, you have any more suggestions?
