since you're soliciting opinions, I'll offer mine. I am suspicious of any code that uses an explicit SET DATASESSION. Both the help file and one or more members of the fox team have stated that it's not really designed to be used for anything except debugging.
IMO, A datasession belongs to an object- if you want data from that session, ask the object for it, and let the object operate on its own data. Any other way is just plain awkward IMO.
