Have you ever configured Border Manager, Groupwise, ZEN Works, InocuLAN or anything of that nature for a network? It's not trivial or even easy... Job security has a lot more to do with happiness of both parties involved. A LAN Admin usually enjoys seeing his network grow when he is doing a good job, and tends to want to go elsewhere when it becomes a mess.
