Assuming your friend is familiar with VFP, you could start him out with Jim Booth's n-tier white paper at http://jamesbooth.com/n-tier.htm. Also, Doug Hennig has a paper on n-tier available for download at http://www.stonefield.com (click on the "technical papers" link for a list of the individual papers). I'm sure there are many other good ones too, but these two come to mind right away.

And since you mentioned SQL Server, I'd recommend the book "Client/Server Applications with Visual FoxPro and SQL Server" by Urwiler, DeWitt, Levy, & Koorhan, published by Hentzenwerke.
