Hi ,

Your getting close. There are several methods of controling access to servers.

Oracle Internet Directory Is Like LDAP you need an Oracle Internet Server. Useful in multi server internet environments...

The others i.e. microsoft and novell

>I do not understand what Hostname means and directory service.
That's why Ia defaulted to 1)Oracle Internet Directory.

HostName is the name of the ldpa or oracle server.
A directory service is like LDAP where you have a directory server which contains the info on where the servers are located TCP\IP addresses, ports ect.
WHen you connect you don't really know (or care which server you connect too).

In your case you probably would use Local net Service Name.
In oracle program group...
-Select Network Administration | Net 8 COnfiguration assistant .
-Local net Service Name ...
-Add
-Choose Database version
-Enter a name (this is the tnsname you get in error you are missing)
-TCP
-hostname=server IP address or name
-test connection

Hope that works!
