Thanks to all who offered solutions to the several problems I detailed.
Using =padl(rtrim(THIS.value),6,'0') in the lostfocus property of a character field gave me the leading zeros I needed, and setting the CENTURY and DELETED in the base form's init fixed my other problems.

However, I'm still getting numerous VFP.exe exception errors whenever I hit a bug in my code, and I'm more than a little concerned that the consensus seems to be that you just have to learn to live with frequent crashes until you have the experience to avoid the numerous programming pitfalls! Surely we should expect M$S to make the product more robust than that?
