The main goal with the Points system is the recognition. The reward is just one of its gadgets. I'm sure everyone will use it without thinking about that specific item. I like it a lot when I read the map of new messages and that I saw a lot of stars here and there which represents interesting messages. I will also take care of marking appropriate messages when applicable.
