I am running IE 5.5 and, though I've never experienced the problem you have described, I have had another problem in the past. It dealt with child windows that would not load. I found out that my IE install had become corrupt. I fixed it with the following steps (try this if you are using IE 5.5):
1. Close all open apps.
2. Start > Run
3. Enter the command: rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance
4. A dialog should appear with "Repair Internet Explorer" selected. Click
OK.
5. It will prompt you to reboot.
