You are right - source control is a real cost and should be considered up front at the begining of any project, along with training time per employee. The amount saved by source control is a variable and I see no way to define it as a "real savings". However, for anyone who has used the features of VSS, etc. to help "save the bacon", it is priceless! I even use it at home for my consulting jobs. The biggest benifit to me is within a multi developer environment.
