I'm a better programmer than a bass player so maybe I shouldn't talk but I think on bass I play between the melody, like a voice that sings alongside the main voice. I know some bass players think on or between the rhythm and orient themselves to the bass drum, I try to do that but not as successfully. I find it absolutely impossible to sing and play bass at the same time, though some people have no problem. I have no problem playing guitar and singing. Let me rephrase that. I sing just as well with or without guitar. Sometimes on long trips I come up with songs in my head that are built on bass but they don't work as well as the guitar based ones. Though right now, playing in a cover band, I don't write much

>I have many friends who play bass. We kid them about "how they think musically". Do you think along a melodic line, bass or rhythm? What do you think of as you are walking, sitting or just thinking musically speaking? The ribbing goes on but without the bass player many musicians would be lost!

>I have lots of funny stories about my friends who play bass - some play double bass. One friend plays at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, and takes his double bass on a city bus from the other end of town, to his gig. What a sight!!! All musicians are fun to be around, the kind of fun is another question.
