I would suggest that even if there was only one software company, with one operating system the product would be unstable. Add one program, and there would be a conflict. Additional programs would have additional conflicts. This seems to be the nature of the beast we call software.

With hardware we have the term tolerances which are allowances due to human imperfection. In software we have bugs also due to human imperfection.

Again, with hardware, if tolerances are within established limits, all is well. With software a bug is a bug and the chances are someone is going to find it. That leads to the classic line from a programmer to a user who complained about a program bug. After hearing the compalint the programmer responded: "You should not have used that combination of keys"!
