That's a damn good question. One option to consider is not use the MM event object, but use a COM+ event instead. COM objects can participate in transactions. I'd have to think this one through more carefully, but I believe MM bizobjs have the option of participating in a default data session or a private datasession. I'm also pretty sure you can set the datasession on the fly, but I'd have to research how to do this more carefully.
