He is either overlooking or misunderstanding your term "string translations." In C, the preprocessor directive "#define" is often called a "macro." This terminology is confusing for VFP because it has runtime macros -- &. VFP programmers should think of #define as a pre compile macro.

Hi Albert, many thanks for the backup. I'm also left wondering how George could confuse "string translations" with 'evaluating expressions' - either severe dyslexia or some fiend swapped his cofee for that decaf' stuff! I must confess it took me a while to notice that George and I were pretty much arguing the same point.
