Comparing frameworks is always a matter of choice (and can lead to arguments). I use Promatrix and the last thing I would describe it as would be an application compiler.

For the record, the Promatrix newsgroups frequently feature dis-contented ex-VFE users who have moved to Promatrix.

Is Promatrix better than VFE ? In my opinion it is but that is because it suits my needs.

Choosing a framework is largely a matter of matching your requirements to the best fit and the only way to do that is to research all available frameworks as much as you can.
