I tested the update outside the application using just the database and view. What happens is that even when browsing the view, if I change a value in the problem field, it generates a syntax error. Once the error is generated, I can not move from that row and column with getting the error again. If I start out by changing the value of a diffent field, everything is fine. Only that field causes the problem.
