Right. You're approach is easier once you're used to it.
My approach is easier from the minute you start using it. With proper backups and right type of drives you should never experience corruption - as a matter of fact the only type of corruption I'm familiar with is the one Windows 2000 causes if you don't have the correct patches installed.
I do have to admit, though, it took me a while to understand what VSS was doing until I got the hang of it... But just like your method, once you've got it - you've got it!
