It is Norton Antivirus! Turn it off.
>One of my clients is starting to experience some horrible performance of our application over their LAN. They're running Win95 workstations with token ring through a router to an NT server where the data & application are sitting.

>Their performance was reasonable as of a couple of weeks ago. One thing we're looking into is how they have their Norton Antivirus configured, in terms of which files are being scanned etc. The other thing I wanted to check was something I recalled a couple of years ago but don't remember enough to make the suggestion to their IT department.

>I recall that there was an issue with NT Server's opportunistic locking setting in the registry causing VFP data access to come to a slow crawl. What I don't remember is if the locking has to be enabled or disabled for the best performance. I know which hive in the registry it should be in but don't recall what the key name should be.
