>Hey George, if the ligtning strike wasn't too intense it probably just took out the line drivers on the port (usally just behind the connector). If they used a IC chip and soketed it, you can probably go to Radio Shack and replace it for a couple of bucks. It may be soldered in, but easy to take out. If it's old enough, it will have individual componets for each line and that's a bit more of a hassle.

It was pretty close and came really without warning. There had been some rumbling off in the distance, but nothing close, just a big boom. It took out on that phone line a caller ID as well, and perhaps my 900 Mhz phone that was connected to the computer via the modem. It was a Microsoft phone with a speaking caller ID. Won't know for sure until I get a modem up and running. Also took out the security system (via the phone line), and (not via the phone line line, but maybe the cable connection) a new 32" color TV. Fortunately, I've got an extended warranty on that, so that'll be replaced without a problem.
I will, however, give it a try. I've got a friend that repairs this kind of stuff and maybe he can help me out.
Thanks,
George
