AFAIK always field takes precedence. If there is such a setting honestly I'm not aware of it :)
Similar to this I would mention another thing. If you have one char named field 'a'-'j' it might catch you since a-j are implicit workarea aliases (rooting from xbase when there were 10 workareas). I vaguely remember a message that was caught by this fact.
