They predict that quakes in excess of 9.0 will hit the NorthWest. Missouri and New York also have some bad fault lines as well as South Carolina (ie. Charleston, 1886). California is not the only state with the potential of earthquakes. In fact the experts say ours are mild compared with those of the North West. Remember we are speaking of geologic time and not recorded history. We do have a high population density where earthquakes like to strike so I guess that is one of the factors for where to place a city in California.
