>>This won't answer your question directly, but it may be of interest. Due to changes in the way all Office 2000 applications work, GETOBJECT() is pretty much (IMV) pointless. Since each application is more or less an SDI application, I just use CREATEOBJECT() with them.

>Yeah, that'll work BUT the strange thing is that the GETOBJECT() call works fine on my machine with Office 2000 Pro installed BUT NOT with student machines with only Word 2000 and Excel 2000 installed. They (the students) have had this problem at work and we're trying to solve it in class. At work, the users have Office 97 Standard Edition installed on their user's machine and have the same problem trying to use GETOBJECT(). It can't be an Office '97 thing since we're running Word 2000 here in class and getting the exact same results.

Jim,

A pure, unadulterated SWAG here. I couldn't find any reference to this in the MS KB, but I did see one that might indirectly apply. The guess here, would be that the standard edition isn't inserting a reference to itself in the Running Object Table. See MS KB article Q147573 and try the solution offered there. As I said, this is pure guess work, but given the symptons, it might explain it.
George
