>Nope. One thing I didn't want to happen was to become climatized. Besides, I firmly believe that one's resistance to the cold is largely a state of mind.

George;

I've been in temperatures of -48 with 90-mph winds. With survival gear we were allowed to go outside for not more than 90 seconds. I think than more than ones state of mind was involved in this case.

I get a kick out of the tourists that visit San Francisco in July with shorts. Man we do have some great fog! These same folks will tell me that “-15 in the Mid West is not cold” but “Winter in San Francisco is too cold”. Now if they would only stay at home and not move here!

When I was on an Air Force Inspection Team, we would visit sites in the Mid West where they had satellite locations perhaps 20 miles away. Once a week someone would have to go to the satellite location to perform checks on critical electronic equipment. The person assigned to this task would be given a half-track with survival gear and food for two weeks. It was thought that would suffice for the typical emergency that might be encountered. This was meant to be a four hour job by the way.

Every site I visited had evidence of what bad weather was like. Invariably, after hearing the horror stories and even seeing photographs of past winters, someone would always say “if you thing this is bad, you should see such and such site”! Boy, do I have a list of where not to visit!

Tom
