>I have one machine at home with Win 95 installed, which I use for testing only. I would never again use it for development. An interesting point is how complex an operating system is. Seems like Win 2000 was released around December 1999 and in October 2001 we have XP being released. That is a shorter cycle than Visual Studio 6.0 to 7.0 will enjoy.

I've looked at both Win2K and WinMe as transitional OSes. It was sometime ago (I can't recall...suffering from "old-timers" disease< g >) that I heard about Microsoft's intent to merge Win9x with WinNT. At first, I seem to recall that folks initially thought that this would be manifested in Win2K, but that quickly bit the dust, especially with the release of WinMe.

What I think happened was that these products were designed to ease the transition into this merger of the technologies. If so, it would not surprise if this were the reason behind the relatively fast turn around.

Then again, I could be wrong.

>I wonder what percentage of computer users installed Windows 2000? Last I heard it was not a very large number. As each operating system is introduced it seems to be more stable and to me that makes it worthwhile!

I have no clue, but I'd say it would have been limited to those already running NT plus some upgrades (like us) from Win9x.

From what I understand about Win2K, the first and foremost goal of the design team was stability. I've had almost no problems with it so far.
