Jerry,
>Joe, if he is running KDE then he can change modes with alt+cntrl++, if the X configuration was setup during install to support more than one resolution, and he doesn't have to use a command line program. (Unless he wants too. It amazes me how often I jump into a term to do something because it is so quick and easy.) I don't know about GNOME cause I rarely use it, but I hear it is a very good desktop too.
Yeah, interactively the keyboard combo can't be beat...
I used the command line program to bind to an fvwm mouse event. I had a wireless mouse and could use it to run XMMS and play my MP3s from the living room. Problem was, to run my PC video signal through the TV I needed to switch the X mode to 640x480, and had no keyboard, so I used the command line behind a pop-up menu item and it worked great...
