I have three versions (5,6,7) of VFP installed on the very same PC. All of them I call the very same way (using configuration setting). And guess what? VFP5 and VFP7 give me table_name.def as you wish, but VFP6 - table_name.def.dbf!
So, I would follow exactly as it is documented, CREATE FILENAME.. meaning without extension, I believe.
