Memorial Day started out as Decoration Day, on which graves of Civil War veterans were decorated (flowers, etc.). I'm told that, in the South, Memorial Day is much less observed than in the North. A friend said that some school districts there schedule a half-day on Memorial Day as the last day of school. Here, it's a school holiday (though Veterans Day and Columbus Day are not in my town).
