Hi!
Not sure about menu, but in VFP transparent areas are defined by a *.MSK file that is really a 2-color (black/white) bitmap that defines which areas are transparent by white (or black? do not remember...) color. Just see a samples for VFP - most bitmaps there come with appropriate MSK file.
You can also try to make a 256-color picture and make the white color not really white, but 1 point less white, in other words, RGB(254,254,254). For users it will look the same.
