When I run the executable on the hard drive, my test wait windows come up inside a Fox window, and everything comes up; when I run it from the network, the windows pop up in the corner of my screen, no Fox window appears, and it dies again, as if it really were modeless.

sounds like you have a config.fpw file on your network with SCREEN=OFF
