OK, I found it, there is an option in VSS that allows to select the behavior about writable files (default, replace, ask, merge). Somehow it had been set to "ask" instead of "replace".

I was using the previous release, I think it was 6.0a, and had never seen that message before-- maybe I changed the option when upgrading!
