Rolf,
Sounds you have an old MDAC installed. With the update of MDAC (2.1 and later - current 2.7) there are problems supporting old foxpro formats. If you were to use fox2x free tables then with memo in them you're in trouble. I take 2 approaches depending on source.
1) Fox2x style usage - then do not use mailmerge opendatasource or any other means of ODBC but create a document with a table in it that serves as datasource.
2) If VFP database then use opendatasource.
Posted code samples on both few times. I'll try to locate and give you pointers.
