Keith,

>I want to evaluate WWWC for use in future projects, but after spending a half of a day attempting to install and configure it, I am beginning to be concerned about the reliability of the product.

No problems with reliability, although initial setup can be challenging if you do not follow the step by step in the docs.

>I have been unable to find clear, concise, step-by-step instructions on how to install and run the software on a W2k/IIS server and VFP7 client system. The questions I have so far are:

Everything runs on the server, so you need VFP installed there. The only thing running on the client machine is the Web Browser.

>1. What portion should be installed on the server and what portion on the client?

It is all installed on the server. Note that the "server" can be your workstation or laptop that also runs the browser, as long as it has web server software installed on it (IIS preferred, but PWS can work with some occasional limitations).

>2. How can I install the software without installing VFP on the server?

A finished application can be installed with just the VFP runtimes on the server, but the machine you use for development must have full VFP on it.

>3. What steps have to be performed to register the classes on the client machines?

Nothing.

>4. Why do I get an "Alias name already in use" error when running the CONSOLE.EXE program?

I don't know the answer to that one.

>5. When I choose Create New Project from the Console, where will it put the resulting files?

In whatever directory you are running for the project files and in whatever virtual directory you specify for the web part of the files.

>6. Whenever the HTML help attempts to load, I get the message 'Cannot open the file "file://%systemroot%\wwhelpicons.bmp".'

Don't know.

>7. Will I be able to use the evaluiation version in my own application to test with or is this a canned version?

You can make changes to the functions included in the Process class of the demo prg, to test it and see what can be done. I suggest copying a function, renaming it, and using your own tables instead of those in the sample, changing fieldnames as needed in the code. Look at opening a table or querying into a cursor, then running Response.ShowCursor against it for a fast output of table data.

The demo version does not give you full source code for all the classes, but does allow you to play with the process class, which is where all the action takes place and where you will do most of your initial programming to see what it can do.

I don't know the implications of running the DEMO version with VFP7, but I know the full release version includes downloadable binaries for VFP7 and full source code that can be recompiled.

Maybe someone can jump in here with info on running the DEMO under VFP7...

I have used Web Connection for several years, since before joining EPS Software (a company closely allied with West Wind) and highly recommend it, as do many others who hang out here. You will find much support both here and at www.west-wind.com/wwthreads, where you can probably get a fast answer about running the demo under VFP7.
