Bill,

Can you give me any info as to what was discussed about Citrix Metaframe and Terminal Server? I'm in the process of evaluating them right now.

Thanks,

Perry

>Attendance: 23 people -- some from large insurance, health administration, research, and financial companies. Some independent developers. Several who hadn't attended a user group meeting in a while. The "word of mouth" campaign worked! Phone list was kind of out of date -- but we got the word out and made some new contacts.

>Mike Helland presentation -- Examples of consuming and publishing web services. To consume a web service Mike showed how to look up available web services at www.xmethods.com, how to register the service in Visual Fox Pro 7.0, how to view the available methods and their parameters in the intellisense editor, and how create an instance of the service within a fox pro program, how to actually pass the parameters, get the return values in the form of xml, how to convert this painlessly to a cursor and populate a grid -- all in a mere snippet of code. Look at xmethods.com to see the services that are currently available. Some discussion of data validity, system security, and a lot of interest in this new capability. The example of the service called was Fox Central, which is a site that houses information about fox pro resources and events. Most importantly, it is a publisher of web services -- meaning that any programmer can attach and pull down the information.

>He also showed how to set up a Fox Pro Com Server which would be a publisher. His example was a simple calculator that could be called from a local computer over the web. He went through the relatively few steps of building the server app and registering it.
>
>Members discussed what kinds of applications could benefit from these abilities -- those that don't really want to be limited to what the browser does with html -- rather those that need to grab data for some expanded manipulation.
>
>In the free discussion period, two topic arose: using Citrix Metaframe and Terminal Server, and passing and receiving arrays to/from a COM server.
>
>Carl Karsten demonstrated how www.fox.wikis.com works as a user controlled repository of information about fox pro.
>
>Decision was to keep building the group by emphasizing a combination of 1) high quality presentations and 2) free form discussion/ad hoc show and tell presentation and questions.
>
>Members are urged to sign into the FUDG page on the WIKI and give a brief bio to build more familiarity and comaradarie -- as well as apply Carl's lesson on how to edit those pages.
