think I may have found the problem under Win98 (at least Win98SE). If I passed a root folder to the object, the only things I could see were the folders below it. No Desktop, etc. However, when I eliminated that parameter (which is optional), I saw the desktop, nethood, etc.

The Win98SE box is running Shell32.dll version 4.72.3612.1700.
