We're using C# to call VFP mtdlls in ASP.NET. Interop is a great way to get your feet wet. Also, I don't think it has to be an either/or situation. use whichever one makes sense for the given situation or maybe both. But you can't go wrong learning .NET. I personally prefer C# over VB.net since I've probably done more work in C++ than VB and also there seems to be a slight advantage in power...
