Even when trying to force a format with a dismount, I get a message saying that "format cannot be run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run id this volume is dismounted first" When I select 'Y' to proceed, the volume does not get dismounted and the disk doesn't get reformatted.

Allan,

If you do have a full version ox XP pro, you should be able to boot from the CD if your bios is setup for it, and from the installation menu, you can delete the partition and reformat then install.
